Connect your Stripe account

Let your store, sales pages and courses take payments, paid straight into your own Stripe account.

BusinessTeam memberAgencyAgency clientWho can do it: owner, admin

Connecting Stripe lets your store, sales pages and courses charge for what they sell. Cards are charged on your own Stripe account, so the money lands in your Stripe balance. Until Stripe is connected, no checkout can be completed.

Before you start

  • A Stripe account, or the details to create one: your business name and address, the bank account Stripe should pay out to, and identity details for the business owner. Stripe asks for these on its own screens.
  • Owner or admin access to the workspace.

Steps

  1. Open Settings › Payments. The Taking payments card shows Checking with Stripe… while it asks Stripe for your status.
  2. Press Connect Stripe. The button reads Opening Stripe… and Stripe's own pages open.
  3. If you already use Stripe, sign in and approve the connection. You are not asked to fill anything in twice.
  4. If you are new to Stripe, create the account and answer every question it asks, including the bank account for payouts.
  5. When Stripe sends you back, you land on a Taking payments page. Stripe is connected. means you are done.
  6. If the page says Stripe still needs a bit more., press Finish setting up. Stripe opens where you left off.
  7. Buy your cheapest product yourself, then refund it from your Stripe dashboard. Wick & Ember Candle Co. tested with a £6 tea-light pack.

What each status means

What Settings › Payments says What it means
Stripe is connected. You can be paid. Cards are charged and the money goes to your Stripe balance.
"Cards will be charged. Stripe has not switched payouts on yet…" You can take payments, but Stripe is holding the money in your balance until it switches payouts on.
Stripe is reviewing your details. You have sent everything. Stripe usually answers within a day and payments start the moment it does.
Stripe still needs a bit more. Stripe is waiting for something; the card lists what, in Stripe's words. Press Finish setting up.
Only a Connect Stripe button No Stripe account is connected yet.

"Your payment setup isn't finished"

Until Stripe can charge cards, your Dashboard shows a banner: You can't take payments yet. if you never started, or Your payment setup isn't finished. if Stripe still needs something. Its link opens Settings › Payments. The banner cannot be dismissed; it goes away by itself once Stripe says your account can take payments.

What happens next

  • Your store checkout and any sales page with a product attached start taking payments straight away.
  • Stripe's own card fees are separate and set by Stripe. An order that carried a platform fee shows it as a Platform fee line on the order.
  • Once connected, Settings › Payments links to your own Stripe dashboard. Payouts, refunds and disputes are handled there.
  • The status is re-checked each time you come back to the page, because Stripe can withdraw permission later.

On the Free plan a platform fee of 2% is taken from each sale. Paid plans have no platform fee.

For agencies

Each client takes payments into their own Stripe account. Open the client with Sub-accounts › Open, then go to Settings › Payments inside their account and connect their Stripe there, or ask the client to do it. The Stripe account you connect in your own agency account is the one that bills your clients for their plans.

For clients of an agency

Your customers pay into your own Stripe account, not your agency's. Whether a platform fee is taken depends on your plan; a store's Settings tab shows it under Taking money.

Troubleshooting

I finished on Stripe but the page still says "Stripe still needs a bit more". Coming back from Stripe does not mean Stripe has everything. Press Finish setting up and complete the remaining items. Also sign in to your Stripe dashboard and look for a banner asking for a document or a detail.

It has said "Stripe is reviewing your details" for more than a day. The review is Stripe's, not the app's. Check your email and your Stripe dashboard for a message from Stripe.

I see "Couldn't open Stripe. Wait a moment and try again." Wait a minute and press Connect Stripe again. If it keeps happening, contact support.

Customers say the checkout told them the shop cannot take payments. Stripe is not connected, or it is connected but cannot charge yet. Nobody was charged. Open Settings › Payments and follow the status shown there.

Money was charged but has not reached my bank. Either Stripe has not switched payouts on yet (the card says so), or the payout is waiting for Stripe's payout schedule. Both are visible in your Stripe dashboard.
