Get a phone number
Buy a number for your business so you can text customers, receive their replies and use texting in workflows.
Texts to your contacts go out from a number of your own, and their replies land in Conversations. Workflows, review requests and the inbox all use it. Buying one takes a minute.
Before you start
- Money in your wallet for the first month.
- For texting people in the United States, plan to complete the US texting registration after buying. Until it is approved, texts to US numbers are refused.
A number costs $3 a month.
Steps
- Open Settings › Channels.
- On the SMS row, press Set up (or Manage if you already have a number). The Texting page opens on the Numbers tab.
- Press Get a number. The Get a phone number window opens.
- Choose the Country: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia or Israel.
- Optionally type an Area code, for example
512. - Press Search. Up to ten numbers are listed, with their place.
- Click the number you want.
- Press Get followed by the number. A message says the number is yours and texting is on.
What happens next
- The number is listed under Phone number and texts, with what it can do (SMS, voice), the monthly price and the next charge date.
- The first month is charged from your wallet now. It renews monthly from your wallet.
- Replies to it land in Conversations. Codes and alerts from short codes (for example a WhatsApp or bank verification code) appear under Codes and alerts sent to your number on the same tab instead.
- For US numbers, a yellow line says US texting needs a one-time registration (about 5 minutes). Press Register now.
- You can hold up to three numbers. To add another, press Add another number.
Releasing a number. Press Release beside it and confirm. Texts to it stop arriving, and it can't be got back.
For agencies
Open the client first (Sub-accounts › Open) and buy the number inside their account; it is paid from their wallet. From Texting across your clients you can also move a number from one client to another.
For clients of an agency
Your agency may look after texting for you. If the US registration says your agency looks after it, ask them to set it up. Numbers and texts are paid from your own wallet unless your agency has arranged otherwise.
Troubleshooting
"Nothing free there right now. Try another area code." No numbers are free in that area code. Try a nearby one, or leave the area code empty.
"Your wallet cannot cover the number's first month. Top up under Billing & wallet first." Add credit under Settings › Billing & wallet, then try again.
"Three numbers is the most one account can hold. Release one first." Release a number you don't use, then buy the new one.
Texts to US customers are refused after buying. US carriers need your business registered first. Finish the Registration tab.
Customers abroad can't reply to my texts. Texts sent abroad from a US number arrive from a sender name and can't be replied to. For two-way texting in another country, get a number in that country.
