Add a quiz to a lesson
Put multiple-choice questions on a lesson, set the pass mark, and see what students experience when they answer.
A quiz checks that a student took in the lesson. Each question has one right answer. The quiz is marked the moment the student submits it, and it never shows them the right answer, so it cannot be handed over one attempt at a time. Passing ticks the lesson off.
Before you start
- A course with at least one lesson. See Build an online course.
- Your questions, each with one right answer and at least one wrong one.
Steps
- Open Products › Courses and click the course.
- In the Lessons card, open the lesson by pressing empty or "… added" on its row.
- Under Quiz, press Add a quiz. One blank question with two answers appears.
- Type the question, for example "How many rest days should you take in week one?".
- Type the answers. Tick the round button beside the right one. Only one answer can be right.
- Press + Answer to add more answers, and Add a question for the next question.
- Set the pass mark in Pass at … %. It starts at 70.
- Press Save course at the top of the Lessons card.
To take the quiz away, press Remove quiz.
What students see
- Under the lesson, a panel headed Check what you know shows the pass mark, for example "70% to pass".
- They pick an answer to each question and press Check my answers.
- The panel says Passed or Not passed yet, and how many questions to look at again, for example "One question to look at again". The questions they got wrong are marked, but the right answer is never shown.
- They can change their answers and submit again as often as they like. Once they have passed, the button reads Try again.
- Passing marks the lesson finished, so they do not have to press Mark as finished as well.
What happens next
- Passing every quiz first time earns the Full marks badge, if the course awards badges. See Award certificates and badges.
- A student who finishes every lesson, including those with quizzes, can be issued the course certificate automatically.
Things to know
- A question needs wording, at least two answers, and one answer marked right. The editor shows what is missing in red under the question: "This question has no wording.", "Give at least two answers to choose between." or "Mark which answer is right, or this question is dropped."
- A question with a problem is dropped when you save. Fix every red line before you press Save course.
- The pass mark can be from 1 to 100.

Troubleshooting
Some of my questions disappeared after saving. They had a problem: no wording, fewer than two answers, or no answer marked right. Add them again and fix the red message before saving.
A student says they got the answers right but did not pass. The pass mark is a percentage of the questions. With a 70% pass mark and three questions, they need all three right, because two out of three is 67%. Lower the pass mark or add questions.
A student asks what the right answer was. The quiz never shows it, on purpose. They can see which questions to look at again, re-read the lesson and try again.
The quiz does not appear for a student. The lesson may still be locked by its delay. The quiz appears once the lesson opens.
