Group products into categories

Create categories, put products in them, and choose the order shoppers see them in on your store.

Categories let shoppers narrow your shelf, for example "Candles", "Diffusers" and "Gift sets". They belong to your whole account, so every store you run shares them. You choose a product's categories in its form, and you rename, reorder or delete categories in one place.

Before you start

Steps: put a product in a category

  1. Open Sites › Stores, press Open store, and choose the Products tab.
  2. Press the pencil icon on the product.
  3. Open Categories in the form and tick the categories the product belongs in. To make a new one, type it in New category and press Enter. The list shows the names you already use, so you do not end up with two spellings of one thing.
  4. Press Save changes. A new category is created when the product is saved, so cancelling leaves nothing behind.

Steps: rename, reorder or delete categories

  1. In the store's Products tab, press Categories above In your catalogue.
  2. The Categories window lists every category, its address (such as /candles) and how many products are in it.
  3. Use the up and down arrows to set the order. It is the order shoppers see them in. You see "Order saved."
  4. Press the pencil to rename one, or the bin to delete one.
  5. To add a category without choosing products yet, type it in New category and press Add.

What happens next

  • On the store's shelf, shoppers can filter by category, search, and sort (for example Price, low to high or Best selling). Featured follows the order of your shelf.
  • A category with nothing in it is not offered to shoppers, because a filter that leads to "nothing matches" is worse than none. The Categories window marks it "not on the shop".
  • Renaming a category does not change its address, so filter links you have shared keep working.
  • A discount can be limited to categories. See Create discount codes and automatic discounts.

For agencies

Categories belong to each client's account. Set them up inside the client with Sub-accounts › Open.

Troubleshooting

A category does not appear on my store. It has no products that are on this store's shelf. Add a product to it, and check that product is stocked on the shelf.

"You already have that one." A category with that name exists already. Pick it from the list instead of typing it again.

I renamed a category, but my store still shows the old name. Reload the published store. If it still shows the old name, open the store in a private browser window to rule out an old copy in your browser.

I deleted a category by mistake. Add it again with New category, then open each product and put it back in the category.
