Sell a digital download
Upload a file such as a PDF or a pattern, price it, and have it delivered to each buyer through their customer account.
A digital asset is a file somebody buys once and downloads: a guide, a printable, a pattern, a price list. The file is kept private and is only handed to somebody who has paid. Buyers download it from their customer account, through a signed link that expires, so a forwarded address is not a free copy.
Before you start
- The file on your computer.
- Stripe connected under Settings › Payments if you are charging for it.
Steps
- Open Products and choose the Digital assets tab.
- Press Create New. The New Digital Asset form opens on the Details tab.
- Type the Name, for example "Candle care guide", and a Description saying who it is for.
- Open the Pricing tab. Choose One-time payment and enter the Price (USD), or choose Free.
- Open the File tab and choose the file under Asset file. Its name appears under the box.
- Press Save product. You see "Product created", and it is in the Digital assets list.
- Sell it: stock it in a store (open the store's Products tab and press Stock it beside it), or attach it to a funnel page with Sell something here. See Sell a product on a funnel page.
What happens next
- When somebody pays, their Order confirmation email links to their account, and the file is in My library under Downloads.
- The buyer can come back and download it again for as long as they have access.
- To limit how long they keep it, open the product and set How long they keep it in days. Leave it empty for ever.
- A download can also be included in a membership. See Create a membership.
- Downloads have nothing to post, so a basket of only downloads skips the delivery question at checkout.
For agencies
Create the download inside the client's account with Sub-accounts › Open, so it is sold into the client's Stripe account.
For clients of an agency
Your buyers download from your own customer account page, with your logo and name.
Troubleshooting
I made the download from a store's New product form and buyers get no file. That form does not take the file itself; the download's own page does. Open Products › Digital assets and click the download. In The file card, which says No file attached yet., press Attach file and choose the file. You see "File attached". Anybody who has already bought it gets the file the next time they press Download in their account.
I need to replace the file. Open the download under Products › Digital assets. In The file card, press Replace file and choose the new file. You see "File replaced". It takes effect at once: everybody who has bought it, before or after, gets the new file the next time they press Download in their account. Nobody is emailed about the change, so tell your buyers if they should download it again. To check which file is attached, press Download it.
A buyer says the download link has stopped working. Download links expire on purpose. Ask the buyer to sign in to their account again and download it from My library.
A buyer paid but the download is not in their library. Check the order under Sales › Orders. If it says Pending, a bank debit has not settled yet. See Fix buyers who cannot get into what they bought.
"Couldn't create this product" when saving. The message says why. The most common reasons are a missing name, or your plan's product allowance.
