Texts not sending

What each texting message means, from a missing number or US registration to opt-outs, daily limits and an empty wallet.

When a text cannot go out, the app says why, in the conversation, on the step, or on your number's card. Most causes are one of five: no number yet, US registration not finished, the person opted out, a daily limit, or an empty wallet.

Before you start

  • The message you saw, word for word if you can.
  • The phone number you were texting, including the country code.

Steps

  1. Check you have a number. Open Settings › Channels. The SMS line should show Live. If it offers Set up, you have no number yet: press it, then Get a number.
  2. Check US registration. If the SMS line shows Registration pending and says "US texting needs a one-time registration (about 5 minutes).", press Register and complete the form. If it says "US texting is with the carriers, usually 1-3 business days.", wait for approval. Until then, texts to US numbers are held.
  3. Check the last failure. Press Manage on the SMS line. On the Numbers tab, the Phone number and texts card shows the last text that failed, when, and why.
  4. Check your wallet. Texts are paid from the wallet. If it is empty, top up under Settings › Billing & wallet.
  5. Check the person. Open their contact record. If they replied STOP or otherwise opted out, you cannot text them.

What happens next

Once the cause is fixed, send the text again.

For agencies

Each client account has its own numbers and registration. Check the client's Settings › Channels inside their account.

Troubleshooting

"No phone number yet. Get one under Settings, Texting." Get a number first. See Get a phone number.

"Texts to US numbers are not switched on yet…" or "This number is not registered for US texting yet…" US carriers need your business registered before they deliver. Finish Settings › Texting › Registration. Approval usually takes one to three business days, and US texts go out the moment it is approved.

"This contact opted out of texts." They asked not to be texted. Respect it; contact them another way if they have asked you to.

"Your balance is empty. Top up under Billing & wallet to send texts." Top up, then send again.

"You have reached today's texting limit of … messages." Your number has a daily limit that rises automatically as your sending history builds. Replies to people who text you are not affected. Send the rest tomorrow.

"Bulk texts are paused for 24 hours: too many people opted out, or too many messages failed to arrive." A protection for your number. Replies to people who texted you still go out. Before your next bulk send, check your list is people who agreed to hear from you.

"This number is in Texas…" Texas only allows bulk texts under stricter conditions, and your settings block them. One-to-one replies still go through.

"That is not a phone number we can text" Check the number on the contact, with its country code, for example +44 7700 900123.

The person abroad can't reply. Texts sent abroad from a US number arrive from a sender name and cannot be replied to. For two-way texting in another country, get a number there.

WhatsApp: "Outside that window it must be an approved template." WhatsApp allows free-form messages only within 24 hours of the person's last message to you. After that, send an approved template.
